A UW-Madison sophomore was found dead outside of Sellery Hall Jan. 1 at approximately 12:30 p.m. The student was identified as Mark Mueller, a 20-year-old computer science major from Monroe, Wis.
His body was found by two people walking by the residence hall, which was closed for winter break.
According to UW-Madison Police Sergeant Tamara Kowalski, the investigation shows that Mueller fell and hit his head outside of Sellery and later died from those injuries.
\It was accidental,"" Kowalski said. ""We've determined through the investigation that he fell at some point and hit his head and died from head injuries.""
While police officials have ruled out foul play, the manner of the head injuries is still under investigation, as well as where Mueller actually fell.
Kowalski said Mueller was last seen in several campus area establishments in the 700 block of University Avenue around 3:30 a.m. Jan. 1.
According to Dane County Coroner John Stanley, the autopsy showed Mueller died of head injuries and said alcohol may have contributed to the manner of his death. However, police have not revealed any more details about Mueller's death.
Mueller, who resided in Witte Hall, which was also closed for winter break, had gone home for the holidays but returned to Madison to celebrate New Year's Eve with friends, including UW-Madison sophomore Andy Meara. Meara became concerned when Mueller did not pick up his car the next morning.
