Gov. Jim Doyle appointed five new members to the UW System Board of Regents Jan. 13 amid controversy sparked when the governor announced he would not keep four members of the board whose appointments had not yet been confirmed by the Legislature.
The four members, who were appointed under Republican leadership, have been serving without state Senate confirmation for two years.
Two of the ousted members are protesting Doyle's action. Regents Alfred De Simone and Gerard Randall said they would not resign, despite Doyle's request. However, because the two were confirmed for past terms, they can remain on the Board until Doyle's appointees are confirmed.
Doyle's appointees are: Mark Bradley, a Wausau attorney; Peggy Rosenzweig, a former state senator from Wauwatosa; David Walsh, a Madison attorney; Danae Davis, an employee of Miller Brewing Co. in Milwaukee; and Jesus Salas, a bilingual instructor at Milwaukee Area Technical College.
\These are five highly qualified individuals who will bring a breadth of experience to the board,"" Doyle said. ""They represent Wisconsin's rich diversity and will be able to take a fresh look at the important issues facing our universities.""
Doyle asked Regent Jay Smith to remain on the Board until a replacement is appointed.
Doyle's appointments must now be confirmed by the state Legislature.
