Police investigate campus theft of Serbian spruce

A tree that stood near the Noland Zoology building was stolen over the weekend.

Daniel Einstein, environmental management coordinator at UW-Madison, noticed Tuesday that all that remained of the 8-foot, 23-year-old tree was a stump.

The tree was a Serbian spruce with an estimated value of $235. Einstein said it is not uncommon for trees to be stolen this time of year.

\Christmas-like trees, such as hemlocks and pines, have been stolen in the past,"" he said.

However, Einstein expressed disappointment with such acts.

""These are everybody's trees and cutting them down for your own use is selfish vandalism,"" he said.

Anyone with information regarding the theft is asked to call UW Police at 262-2957 or Campus Crime Stoppers at 262-TIPS. Callers to Campus Crime Stoppers can remain anonymous.
