Madison smokers still need to prepare to put out their cigarettes in a few years.
In the end the new city wide restaurant smoking ban was not challenged during Tuesday's City Council meeting as Ald. Brenda Konkel, District 2, pulled her proposal to revisit the issue.
If Konkel's measure would have completely removed the compromise statute that eventually bans smoking in all bars with make less than 50 percent of their revenue from alcohol and opened the window to create a new one.

According to her colleague, Ald. Mike Verveer, District 4, Konkel removed the measure after letters from both bar owners and anti-smoking advocates were received in support of the current statute.
