Tenants' rights persevere at city council meeting

Tenants' rights advocates had cause to cheer Tuesday night as Madison City Council approved two tenant-friendly proposals according to Ald. Mike Verveer, District 4.

One of the new ordinances caps the amount landlords can charge late fees at 5 percent, while the other makes it illegal for management to charge tenants for typical carpet cleaning.

Another ordinance, proposed by Ald. Dorothy Borchardt, District 12, which would have allowed landlords to charge double the cost of any damage done to the residence, was sent to the city attorney for further review.

\These ordinances now have been debated for several months in City Hall and hopefully this will ensure in the future that landlords can't rip off tenants,"" Verveer said.
