Voters for Ethical Government filed a registration statement on Tuesday to recall former state Senate Majority Leader Chuck Chvala, D-Madison.
The organization will have 60 days from Oct. 29 to collect 14,477 signatures to force out Chvala, who was charged with 20 felonies for extortion, misconduct in office, campaign contribution violations and filing a false report.
John Finch, treasurer and chairman of the recall organization, said he hopes to collect 20,000 signatures to prevent the recall from being contested.
\I believe our politicians should be held to a higher standard, and him being an attorney, that should be a higher standard,"" he said. ""I figure enough is enough. If that man had one ounce of honor in his body, he would resign.""
Chvala's current term will expire in 2005. If enough signatures are obtained, a special recall election will be held in the 16th district.
