Coroner confirms meningitis as student's cause of death

Dane County Chief Deputy Coroner Kurt Karbusicky confirmed the cause of death of a UW-Madison student as meningococcemia, a bacterial infection of the blood, Wednesday. 

 

 

 

The student, who died Tuesday, has now been identified as Edward J. Bailey from Jefferson, Wis. 

 

 

 

Bailey died Tuesday morning at Meriter Hospital, 202 S. Park St.

Karbusicky said there is little chance of infection for those who had casual contact with Bailey.  

 

 

 

University Health Services identified and contacted all persons who had contact with Bailey. They have been treated appropriately. 

 

 

 

Furthermore, UHS officials said there is no risk to the campus community. They recommend students visit the UHS Web site at http://www.uhs.wisc.edu to learn more. 

 

 

 

Karbusicky said the investigation is ongoing.
