Would-be reps. face off at UW

There's a difference between being a voter and an educated voter. Tonight at 7 p.m. in the Memorial Union Theater, the Vote 2002 Coalition is providing an opportunity to become educated with a debate between Democratic congressional incumbent Tammy Baldwin and her Republican challenger, Ron Greer. The debate is free of charge and open to the public.

This is an important debate. Many decisions in the next congressional session will directly affect our lives as students. We are fortunate to have both candidates come to campus and tell us their ideas and stances, which will help you make an informed decision.

Baldwin and Greer are two very different candidates who are passionate about their views and we are expecting an exciting and enriching debate. Topics will range from financial aid and stem-cell research to the Iraq crisis. There will also be an open question-and-answer session to ask about the issues you are interested in.

The debate will be moderated by UW-Madison professor Joel Rogers and founder and director of the Center on Wisconsin Strategy. UW-Madison senior Jason Davis will assist Rogers with the moderating.

Coalition volunteers will be located around campus, including Library Mall and Union South registering students to vote.

The Coalition is a non-partisan student organization that aims to register, educate and motivate students to vote. We have been working hard to register voters, plan tonight's debate and distribute a non-partisan voter handbook in the weeks before the Nov. 5 election as well as hold events on campus.??Over 20 organizations, ranging from candidate support groups to student-of-color organizations have dedicated themselves to the goals of the Coalition but we are always in need of more volunteers.
