The UW System is struggling to educate 11,000 more students than expected this year, according to Katharine Lyall, president of the UW System.
Lyall spoke on the subject Friday at the UW Board of Regents meeting at UW-Whitewater. She said enrollment this year is up by 2,659 to 134,998 compared to the system's target enrollment of 132,339.
This is the result of enrollment pressures and recent state budget cuts to the system.
\This is roughly equivalent to operating one of our larger comprehensive campuses with no funding,"" Lyall said.
In the spring state funding of the UW System was cut by $44 million. This is equal to the cost of educating 8,800 students, Lyall said.
Fred Mohs, a member of the UW Board of Regents, expressed concern that this funding problem will eventually affect a student's overall educational experience.
""I think everyone expects us to stretch and stretch, but with that will inevitably come diminished quality,"" Mohs said.
