'New world order' equals new U.S. imperialism

The balance of powers has shifted. No longer do we have the fears of the Soviet Union looming above us, nor the colonialism of Great Britain. The times have changed.

We live in a

ew world order,"" one in which profit dominates justice and power is endless. This order shuns equality and believes that manifest destiny rules the land. Democracy is optional and the people are irrelevant.

In the past few weeks, events have proven that the above is more than just another conspiracy theory. The fact is, we have some serious issues to deal with, and the more we let them fester, the less chance there will be for recovery.

The world organizations which exist with a wide variety of purposes seem to be catering more and more to America's needs. The clearest example of this is the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund, both of which have the most support from the United States.

They have both been around for almost sixty years. As most corrupt banks do, they ensure that whoever is borrowing from them will suffer. With very high interest rates and political restrictions such as forcing a third-world country to open up trade to specific corporations, we ensure that the countries will continue to live in the same impoverished state as they have in the past.

Congressman Bernie Sanders (I-VT) is one of the outspoken critics of the IMF/World Bank. According to Sanders, ""policies of the IMF over the past 20 years advocating unfettered free trade, privatizing industry, deregulation and slashing government investments in health, education and pensions has been a complete failure for low income and middle class families in the developing world and the United States.""

It's important to understand that the United States puts the most money into the World Bank Group to ensure that our way of doing things gets passed on to the rest of the world. No, that doesn't mean we want to give the opportunity for democracy to the rest of the world. We just want more power and control.

Foreign policy in the past few years has been leading towards the creation of an American Empire. There are many in power here who believe that there is a divine calling that the United States is superior to the world and that it is our duty to spread the word to as many places as possible. The first step to ensuring world domination is perpetual war.

What we were taught in middle school about the Constitution and democracy seems to have been a fantasy. The Senate and Congress gave Bush full discretion to do as he pleases with Iraq. There has been no declaration of war. The checks and balances have been ignored and despite the strong opposition of the people, the war goes on.

After looking at what Bush has been saying as well as the National Security Strategy, we can find phrases such as ""American internationalism"" and ""pax Americana"" (American peace). The focus of Defense right now is how to establish bases all over the world to ensure a strong American empire.

If you aren't scared already, take a look at the Project for the New American Century. This group has been around since 1997, and six of its members play or have played a role in the current Bush administration. In September 2000, a 90-page report entitled ""Rebuilding America's Defenses"" was created by the organization. The document has the appearance of blueprints for the current defense policy.

The report bluntly explains its stance two years ago: ""At no time in history has the international security order been as conducive to American interests and ideals."" It continues to state that the challenge will be ""to preserve and enhance this 'American peace.'"" The entire report focuses on military strategy and plans to move into Iraq, Iran and North Korea, now conveniently designated as the ""Axis of Evil"" by President Bush.

We cannot sit idly and allow the system to collapse before us. We must continue to voice our struggle. We mustn't accept this continuation of the ""new world order"" which Bush Sr. told us about a decade ago.
