Michigan cases may merge

In an effort to stop another freshman class from entering under the current affirmative action policies, the white students who sued the University of Michigan in regard to undergraduate admissions filed a petition Tuesday morning that would allow court justices to consider the case in connection with a separate lawsuit already before the court concerning affirmative action policies at the university's law school.

Federal trial courts upheld the current undergraduate admissions system but struck down the law school's admission system.

The Sixth Circuit Court in Cincinnati heard both cases in December 2001 and ruled the law school's policies were acceptable in May.
