Former Madison Mayor Paul Soglin announced his candidacy for mayor in the 2003 race last week, surprising some local politicians.
\I did not see it coming,"" current Madison Mayor Sue Bauman said during an impromptu press conference only hours after Soglin's announcement.
Soglin, who was mayor from 1968-'73 and again from 1989-'97, stepped down midway through his last term after he lost his bid for a U.S. Congressional seat in 1996 against then-U.S. Rep. Scott Klug, R-Madison.
Soglin said that he entered the race because he was disappointed with candidates currently running and the lack of leadership Bauman was providing for the city.
""I've been very deeply concerned about the course of the city. ... The leadership is not there,"" he said.
With Soglin's announcement there are now eight candidates vying for the job.
