The Bush doctrine of preemptive strikes against nations that pose a threat to national security will put our country in a position we should not pursue: the world's policeman.
If we decide to become the world's policeman, it will be forever and require nation building of the countries we destroy. President Bush's mindset of waging war to keep the peace ensures there will be no lasting peace. The arrogance of power we project'a superiority complex'is the main reason we are so hated. If enforced, the Bush doctrine will be a disaster in terms of human casualties and wasted material resources. It will entrap the United States in an unending cycle of violence.
It would be ironic if the United States started a world war with a preemptive strike against Iraq. To start a war in the Middle East could very well ignite the war to end all wars. Like man, no nation is an island of self-sufficiency; all nations are interdependent. We are the richest, most powerful country in the history of humankind, but we cannot exist as we are without the needed natural resources many countries provide us. A little humility on our part would go a long way toward promoting better relations with our enemies who need us as much as we need them.
