Chronic wasting disease strikes state deer herd

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources discovered chronic wasting disease, a fatal brain disorder similar to mad cow disease, in the white-tail deer population of southwest Wisconsin.

The DNR voted to eliminate the entire herd in the hot-zone area. The decision has met resistance from animal rights activists, local landowners and some hunters.

As of August, nearly 1,000 deer have been eradicated. Recently President Bush declared he would not release $17 million approved by Congress to help fight the disease'an act which some legislators have criticized.
