The Wisconsin women's hockey team (17-6-1 Western Collegiate Hockey Association, 21-10-2 overall) sealed the No. 2 seed in the WCHA Final Five tournament with two wins over Bemidji State Friday and Saturday in Bemidji, Minn.
Friday, the Badgers opened with a 6-2 victory over the Beavers in a contest that included six goals in the second period and a hat trick from sophomore forward Meghan Hunter. Junior forward Kathy Devereaux notched her fifth goal of the season, while sophomore forward Karen Rickard and junior forward Julia Ortenzio put points on the board for Wisconsin.
The win garnered UW its 20th victory of the season.
Saturday, the women returned with an offensive force to match the previous night, scoring four goals to BSU's one.
Two fluke goals by junior defender Sis Paulsen assisted in UW's win. Paulsen's first goal came after a centering pass bounced off a Beaver defender's stick into the net. Paulsen earned her second goal on a slap shot that came off a bouncing clearing attempt.
MacLeod proved her worth for the second time in the series, scoring a power-play goal for UW early in the third period. Hunter earned her fourth goal of the weekend when she scored later in the third with an assist from MacLeod.
The men's swimming and diving team returned to Wisconsin with fifth place in the conference after the Big Ten Championship in Bloomington, Ind., Feb. 28-March 3.
The Badgers, who had 335.5 points, set a school record of 2:56.57 minutes in the 400-yard freestyle relay with sophomores Matt Marshall, Dale Rogers, Chris Anderson and senior Lance Jones competing.
Junior Matt Zuiderhof also swam well, reaching the finals in the 200 fly, where he placed sixth.
