Wisconsin had the third-highest number of mass layoffs, defined as a release of at least 50 individuals, in the country during the last quarter of 200 according to a report put out by the Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Despite the seemingly dire light this puts the state in, the results were not unexpected, according to UW-Madison business Professor Jon Udell.
\It's not really surprising in the sense that this has been a manufacturing recession and Wisconsin is a very manufacturing-oriented state,"" he said.
The data showed that 94 Wisconsin companies laid off a total of 22,894 people in the fourth quarter of last year. Only California and Illinois suffered more.
""From an overall economic ... point of view, though we've had a surge in unemployment, we're still probably better off than the typical state,"" Udell said.
