The state Senate sent a message to Gov. Scott McCallum Tuesday when it refused to take a vote on a bill that would overhaul current campaign finance laws.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Chvala, D-Madison, said he would not allow the floor to take action on Senate Bill 104 since the governor declined to sign a guarantee not to use his line-item veto power on the measure.
Both Chvala and the bill's author Sen. Michael Ellis, R-Neenah, had written letters in hopes of a last minute deal before the Senate began its session Tuesday.
McCallum has said in the past that such an agreement would undermine his gubernatorial power.
The bill, which would ensure that candidates for state positions receive state funding, now returns to the committee phase and will vie against other bills for a place on the Assembly docket.
