Information relating to the autopsies of two anthrax-infected postal workers was released on Monday.
In a joint release, researchers from The Center for Civilian Biodefense Studies at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the National Institutes of Health expressed concern over several areas relating to the anthrax cases.
\The symptoms of anthrax look like many other common diseases. None of the doctors who treated these patients suspected anthrax until they heard reports of other sick postal workers from the news media,"" said the study's lead author, Luciana Borio, a fellow at the Johns Hopkins Center for Civilian Biodefense Studies. ""These cases emphasize the importance of developing more rapid lines of communications between medicine and public health. Clinicians need information to make a proper diagnosis and provide timely treatment for their patients.""
Both postal workers were misdiagnosed and sent home without the proper treatment.
""These cases also demonstrate the urgent need for better disease detection,"" Borio said.
