Badger Bits

 

 

The sixth-ranked women's volleyball team was named Big Ten Champion after it defeated Northwestern (5-14 Big Ten, 9-17overall) at home Wednesday night. 

 

 

 

Wisconsin (19-1, 24-3) ran away with its second straight Big Ten victory after a three-game rout against the Wildcats. Senior middle blocker Sherisa Livingston had 16 kills while senior setter Lizzy Fitzgerald had 46 assists in the 30-23, 30-19 and 30-27 victories over Northwestern.  

 

 

 

The Badgers continued their winning streak against Purdue Friday when they dominated the court in Boilermaker territory. In a team effort, the Badgers produced 53 digs on their way to a 30-18, 30-18, 30-26 victory.

The volleyball team hosts a press conference today at 2 p.m. for the announcement of the 2001 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Tournament bracket. 

 

 

 

 

 

The men's and women's basketball teams headed for the tropics over Thanksgiving break to participate in holiday tournaments.  

 

 

 

The men's basketball team crossed the Pacific Ocean to attend the Big Island Basketball Invitational in Hilo, Hawaii. Wisconsin defeated the University of Hawaii-Hilo 78-62 to advance to the second round of the tournament.  

 

 

 

Junior guard Kirk Penney and senior forward Charlie Wills each had 15 points as they lead the team to victory.  

 

 

 

The men could not pull off a victory against Weber State, however, losing in the semifinals, 73-69.  

 

 

 

Freshman Devin Harris racked up 19 points for Wisconsin, including four three-pointers.  

 

 

 

In the consolation championship, the Badgers took on the University of Hawaii Sunday but were defeated 60-57.  

 

 

 

Harris led UW in scoring with 15 points.  

 

 

 

The women's basketball team flew south to the Virgin Islands for the Paradise Jam Tournament in St. Thomas this weekend.  

 

 

 

Although the Badgers held an early lead in Saturday's game, they couldn't stop the Texas Longhorns and Wisconsin dropped to 1-1 after a 75-70 loss. 

 

 

 

The Badgers bounced back Sunday after their loss and defeated the No. 12 Florida Gators 61-49. Senior forward Jessie Stomski scored a team-high 17 points to lead the Badgers to victory.  

 

 

 

 

 

The men's hockey team found little success when it traveled to Michigan State and Michigan this weekend.  

 

 

 

On Friday, Wisconsin battled with the Michigan State Spartans but came up short-handed, scoring only one goal to MSU's two. Sophomore winger Rene Bourque scored Wisconsin's only goal of the night. 

 

 

 

The Badgers then journeyed to Ann Arbor on Saturday, where they took on the Michigan Wolverines. Wisconsin played a fast-paced game but could not keep up with the Wolverines and lost 5-3.  

 

 

 

The eighth-ranked women's hockey team faced No. 7 St. Lawrence in the Thanksgiving Tournament in Lake Placid, N.Y. on Friday but came up scoreless.  

 

 

 

After two-and-a-half scoreless periods, the Saints scored the only goal of the game and sent Wisconsin packing.  

 

 

 

Wisconsin returned to the ice Saturday to duel with the Beatrice Aeros in the consolation game of the Thanksgiving Tournament.  

 

 

 

Wisconsin skated off the ice after a 1-1 overtime tie with the Aeros.
