The Arc of the United States honored UW-Madison Professor Marsha Mailick Seltzer, acting director of the Waisman Center, with its 2001 Distinguished Research Award Oct. 19.
The Arc awarded Seltzer for accomplishment in research of mentally retarded people and their families. Her work examined improving their social status, living conditions and social support.
Seltzer received the award with colleague Marty Wyngaarden Krauss, an associate dean and professor at the Heller School and director of the Starr Center for Mental Retardation at Brandeis University.
In their research, Krauss and Seltzer examined the lifestyles of families who have a mentally retarded adult living at home. More recently, the professors have joined UW-Madison Professor of Social Work Jan Greenberg in extending the study to families with an autistic or schizophrenic adult.
