UW soccer loses weekend games

The Wisconsin men's and women's soccer teams both held home games this weekend at the McClimon Soccer/Track Complex.

Friday night, the sixth-ranked Indiana Hoosiers outshot the Wisconsin Badgers men's soccer team 16-1 as the Hoosiers defeated the Badgers 4-0.

The Badgers (0-2-0 Big Ten, 6-5-1 overall) suffered their fourth consecutive loss after starting the season with seven straight wins.

After starting off strong against Indiana, the Badgers lost momentum when the Hoosiers scored their first goal.

'We were moving the ball really well the first 20 minutes,' Wisconsin senior forward Dominic DaPra said. 'After that it was downhill from there.'

The Hoosiers' second goal came about two minutes later, when Indiana senior back Ryan Hammer got an assist from junior midfielder Pat Noonan.

Hoosier junior back John Swann put the score to 3-0 ten minutes into the second period.

Then, with nine minutes left in the game, Indiana scored again.

Despite the loss, DaPra said he felt the Badgers played well against the Hoosiers.

'[Senior goalkeeper] Moriba [Baker] played really well and [the] defense played well,' DaPra said. 'Indiana is a really solid team. I knew what to expect.'

UW Head Coach Kalekeni Banda said the team needs to start preparing mentally for future games.

'Physically, I think we are working hard, but mentally, we come up short,' Banda said.

However, DaPra feels that the rest of the season will help the Badgers gain more confidence as they wrap up their season.

'I think things are going to lighten up a little bit,' DaPra said. 'We will be able to get our confidence back and get more wins. Hopefully by the time the Big Ten tournament comes, we will be on a roll.'

After forcing the Minnesota Golden Gophers into overtime, the Badger women's soccer team lost to Minnesota 2-1 Sunday.

The loss dropped the Badgers to 4-8-2 overall and 1-6-1 in Big Ten conference play.

UW junior forward Lauren Schmidt gave the Badgers their only point in the game on a second-half penalty kick.

Minnesota sophomore forward Rachael Roth put the Gophers on the scoreboard in the second half, forcing the game into overtime.

Overtime was interrupted by a delay in the game due to inclement weather. After the break, Gophers senior midfielder Samantha Meyers gave Minnesota the winning point.

Despite the Badgers' loss, Head Coach Dean Duerst felt that the team played well.

'Coming into the game, our approach was good and the team was pretty well organized,' Duerst said.

Schmidt also said she felt confident in the team's abilities.

'I thought we were dominating,' Schmidt said. 'At overtime, I thought we were on a roll. The break wasn't a good thing, because [before] we were really starting to click.'

Looking ahead to next week's game against the seventh-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions, Duerst feels the team has the potential to give Penn State a challenge.

'We are going to have to go in there as a spoiler,' Duerst said. 'We have an opportunity to knock off a big opponent.'

Schmidt said she thinks the Badgers will come ready to play against a tough team like Penn State.

'We always seem to play to the level of our competitors,' Schmidt said. 'Penn State is going to be a challenge, but we always seem to mark up pretty well with them.'
