UW fights the Illini

Two weeks ago the Badgers were pounded by Indiana, 63-32.

A week later, they came from behind and defeated then-No. 25 Ohio State, 20-17.

This week the wild ride continues as UW heads to Illinois to take on the Fighting Illini.

The last time the two teams met in 1998, Wisconsin came away with a 37-3 victory.

Bouncing back from a crushing defeat to be the victor over a ranked opponent isn't something that any team can accomplish, according to Badger Head Coach Barry Alvarez.

'We've got people who are made of substance and guys that aren't afraid to go out there and put their neck on the line and compete,' Alvarez said.

Like the crowd at Ohio State, the Badgers will face another full house in Champaign, Ill.

Playing on hostile ground has not hindered the Badgers as they have won nine of their last 10 Big Ten road games and UW is the only Big Ten team to win at Penn State and Ohio State since the Nittany Lions joined the conference in 1993.

The ability of the Badgers to pick up wins on the road can be attributed to preparations made during the week.

'We try to be very consistent in how we prepare,' Alvarez said. 'We teach them how to deal with the crowd and not worry about anything other than the game.'

Besides playing on the road, the Badgers face the task of shutting down Illinois senior quarterback Kurt Kittner, who averages 239.7 yards per game through the air.

Balancing the Illini's air attack is the tailback duo of Rocky Harvey and Antoineo Harris. Harris has already rushed for 100 yards twice this season.

'You have to play them true, you have to respect both the run and the pass, and they do them both well,' Alvarez said.

The Badger defense will not be the only unit that faces a challenge on the field. Illinois' defense will provide a difficult obstacle for quarterback Brooks Bollinger and the Badger offense to overcome.

'They're a pressure defense and we're going to see a number of different fronts,' Alvarez said. 'Every snap they're going to pressure from linebackers to corners and safeties.'

The run-stopping defense of Illinois has limited opposing offenses to a passing game by shutting down leading rushers.

UW freshman tailback Anthony Davis will face strong opposition in his attempt to become the seventh freshman in Big Ten history to rush for 1,000 yards.

Davis has 806 yards rushing this season on 143 carries and is is the only player to rush for 100 yards against a Ohio State this season.

Against Ohio State, Bollinger balanced the passing between Evans and senior wide receiver Nick Davis. Davis caught the only touchdown pass of the game against Ohio State.

To be successful against Illinois, the Badgers have to bring their 'A' game. Balancing the offense between the rush and the pass will be a necessity against the pressure defense of Illinois.
