At least 11 UW-Madison students and a 3-year-old Madison community member have experienced symptoms of severe intestinal illness associated with the E. coli bacterium.
One student is still hospitalized but is in stable condition, according to University Health Services spokesperson Craig Roberts.
UHS and the state Division of Public Health are investigating the infection's cause, but it is suspected to be directly linked to the pancake tailgate party held at the UW Stock Pavilion before the Wisconsin-Indiana football game Oct. 6.
Some symptoms of E. Coli include bloody diarrhea, stomach cramps, fatigue, and nausea. The symptoms can occur three to eight days after exposure.
Roberts said he expected that many more individuals were infected. Anyone who attended the pancake breakfast and experienced any of the aforementioned symptoms should call UHS immediately at 265-5600.
