The Daily Cardinal puts on a pair of cleats, hikes up its socks and looks to go one on one with UW goalkeeper Kelly Conway.
Conway, a junior from Littleton, Colo., leads the Big Ten in saves, has started every game for the past two years in goal for the Badgers and by the end of next season could set the school record for career saves.
What has been the highlight of this season for you?
Going out to Colorado, for the opener, and beating CU was clearly the best. The way our team scored four goals and dominated was great. By having a lot of friends and family in the stands, it was just a great feeling winning and playing well in front of them.
What were some of your own goals coming into this year and what have you done to meet them?
After losing two great senior defenders to graduation, I felt that I should be a leader this year and so far, I think I have done a pretty good job.
How would you assess the team's performance this year?
It's been rough at times just because we have had a lot of tough breaks. The overtime loss at Michigan and a few real unlucky calls have been hard. We have played real hard every game; it's just those one plays here or there that have been tough.
What is the most difficult part of playing goalie?
Wow, that's tough. It is how others look at you. People think that the goalie either makes or breaks the game and well, it's tough. It is also hard sitting back there sometimes and not being able to help the offense.
What are you most excited about for the spring and the following season?
I am really excited about having a new goalie coach and working on the individual aspects of my game. This off-season is really going to help me improve as goalie.
