House bill would allow greater Pell Grant funding than Bush plan

A bill to increase Pell Grant Funding by more than seven percent over last year's level passed through the U.S. House of Representatives Friday.

According to a statement from Rep. David Obey, D-Wis., minority ranking member of the House Appropriations Committee, the House proposal allows the Pell Grant program to provide up to $4,000 per student.

This proposal, according to the Obey release, is a substantial increase over the $100-per-grant increase provided for in President Bush's budget. The president's allocation would have been the smallest increase since 1995, according to Obey.
