Women's soccer splits weekend
The Wisconsin women's soccer team broke out of its Big Ten scoring slump and came out victorious in its opening weekend contest against the Iowa Hawkeyes, 3-1, but could not stop the Illinois Fighting Illini Sunday, losing 2-1.
UW freshman forward Amy Vermeulen got the first goal for the Badgers in conference play. Three minutes later, Vermeulen scored the game winner on a successful header in front of the net.
Sunday, Illinois and UW were tied at one, when midfielder Tara Schuling provided the game winner in the 75th minute.
UW battles UW-Milwaukee at the McClimon Soccer Complex Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Men's soccer falls twice
The Wisconsin men's soccer team continued its slide as it dropped a nonconference contest to UW-Milwaukee, 3-1 and its opening Big Ten game on the road at Penn State, 2-0.
Senior forward Dominic DaPra notched his Big Ten-leading 11th goal at Milwaukee, but it would not be enough as UWM regained its two-goal lead in the 55th minute of play, stopping the Badgers' momentum.
In the Sunday affair, UW was in trouble again as the 19th-ranked Nittany Lions outshot them 14-3. The Badgers were able to stay in the contest due to the play of goalkeeper Moriba Atiba Baker.
Wisconsin returns home this week to host sixth-ranked Indiana Oct. 12.
