U.S. News and World Report named UW-Madison the eighth-best public university in the nation in its 2002 'America's Best Colleges' rankings.
UW-Madison placed 32nd among all undergraduate institutions, including private schools, and second among public Big Ten schools.
Princeton University was ranked first among all colleges, while the University of California-Berkeley topped the list of public schools. The University of Michigan placed first among public Big Ten schools and third in the list of all public colleges.
The UW-Madison schools of business and engineering each ranked 12th in the nation in their respective categories. The business school's insurance/risk management program and the engineering school's chemical and nuclear engineering programs rated fourth in the nation among their peers.
