Muslim community to host discussions

The Islamic Community of the Madison Area and the Muslim Students Association will hold a press conference today during which speakers will explain why it is incorrect to equate terrorism with the Islamic religion. The conference, which is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. at the WYOU Community Television Studio, 650 E. Main St., was organized in response to the climate of American society, which has become, according to the press release, 'unstable largely due to so many questions and so few answers.'

Thursday, UW-Madison faculty and members of the Madison Muslim community will discuss the religious ideas of Islam and its global influence from 4 to 6 p.m. in 3650 Humanities. The free public event will focus on what constitutes Islam's fundamental beliefs, how the religion is practiced and its effects on social structures and political policy.

'The teach-in's purpose is to dispel myths and misapprehensions that many Americans have about what Muslims truly believe,' said teach-in coordinator Charles Cohn. 'This is especially important since national concern about Islam's basic stance toward war and peace, the sanctity of human life, mercy toward enemies and God's justice has escalated since the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington.'
