Letter to the Editor

Diversity comparisons not accurate, necessary

I've become disenchanted with UW-Madison's policy on diversity. It fails miserably not because it doesn't support diversity, but because it tries too hard. Diversity is not important to this campus. The purpose of this institution is to educate the best and the brightest this country has to offer'not those who have pretty good credentials but are minorities. Don't get me wrong. I'm not against diversity. I'm against this reverse discrimination. The university in no way can make up for years of discrimination against minorities by letting a few extra get in.

I find it even more ridiculous that UW-Madison is compared to the University of California-Berkeley and the University of Michigan in terms of diversity. The demographics those two universities draw from are much different than that of UW-Madison. The University of Michigan is right next to Detroit with a large minority population, and the whole state of California has the largest minority population in the United States. Therefore, of course they're going to have more minorities. I propose a change for the better. Let's take the money that's to be used to fund this diversity project, and instead use it to sponsor scholarships to bring the best, because a university should not be judged on diversity but on the merits of its student body.
