Freshman class may set university record

UW-Madison officials expect the incoming freshman class to be the largest in the university's history.

Administrators said that while they aimed for a class of 5,740 students, final numbers may fall anywhere between 5,900 and 6,100, exceeding the record 5,934 in 1988.

Admissions officers credit UW-Madison's recent publicity surge, particularly in developments of biological research and the university's prominence in stem-cell research, for the university's drawing power.
