Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wis., told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Wednesday that he will go on a 'listening tour' of college campuses to encourage the nomination of a 'progressive' Democratic presidential candidate in 2004.
Though Feingold said he is unlikely to run for president himself, he also did not rule out the possibility.
The listening tour will begin at the University of Michigan Nov. 11 and probably proceed to five or six other campuses during the fall and winter months. Feingold, whose Senate term ends in 2004, named the universities of Iowa, Texas and North Carolina as possible locations.
Feingold also told the Journal Sentinel that he would push the Democratic Party to try to reach young voters through pro-environment and anti-death penalty stances. In addition, he said he would urge the party to move away from the centrist positions of the Democratic Leadership Council, the moderate wing of the party.
