Wisconsin to name California assistant Yuri Suguiyama as head coach of swimming and diving team

The University of Wisconsin swimming and diving team is expected to name Yuri Suguiyama as head coach, replacing Whitney Hite, SwimSwam News reported Tuesday. The 34-year-old Suguiyama comes to Wisconsin after six seasons as men’s associate head coach at Cal, helping guide the Bears to one national title in 2014 and five national runner-up finishes.

Ariana Saghafi has improved drastically as the season has progressed.

After a regular season full of ups and downs including a Big Ten Record for sophomore Beata Nelson and the departure of one of their captains, the No. 21 Wisconsin women’s swim team is ready to put its last four months in the rearview mirror and move to the penultimate point of its season – the Big Ten championships. “It’s always an exciting time of the year because everyone’s always rested and ready to do some special things,” head coach Whitney Hite said.

Wisconsin heads into difficult battle against Trojans of USC

Immediately after a nine-day training trip to Hawaii that was equal parts relaxation and hard work, the unranked Wisconsin swim team is heading to the University of Southern California for a dual meet with the No. 7/No.9 Trojans on Monday to start the second half of their season. Last year, the Trojans threw everything but the kitchen sink at head coach Whitney Hite and his team, and with a reloaded USC squad that includes multiple US National teamers and international Olympians, the Badgers are expecting to have their hands full. USC is a team that’s rife with star power, but Wisconsin sophomore Beata Nelson says going head-to-head with the Trojans’ big names is a challenge the Badgers are up for. “Our expectation is to go out and compete with them,” Nelson said.

Novinski playing key role for Badger swim

On Oct. 19, an 18-year-old freshman at Wisconsin, who spent the majority of high school training alone, put the entire NCAA swimming and diving community on notice when he beat 2016 Olympian Jay Litherland in the 100-yard backstroke at a dual meet. That swimmer’s name is Matt Novinski, and he’s hoping his performance in the pool won’t let opponents forget it.

McCarthy, Nelson, Novinski shine in Big Ten Quad Duals In the first in-conference test of the season, the Wisconsin swim and dive team (1-6 men, 1-6 women) came out of the Big Ten Quad Duals in third place out of four, but achieved some crucial wins in the process. With the star of the women’s team, junior Cierra Runge, still nowhere to be found after missing her fourth straight meet, it was up to other Wisconsin swimmers to pick up the pieces.

M.J. Mao will likely be pushed by Blair Bash of Missouri State in the breaststroke and individual medley events.

Diving with high expectations, Wisconsin swim teams set to open season this weekend

After graduating one of the largest senior classes in recent memory, the Wisconsin swimming and diving team is back in 2017-’18 with a new, more versatile look. With an incoming class that includes two national champions, an Olympian and three high-profile transfers, head coach Whitney Hite and his team should have little trouble climbing the ranks of the Big Ten.
