Community leaders announce Voter ID Month in Madison

Community leaders held a press conference Wednesday morning to announce March as Voter ID Month in Madison, an effort coordinated by VoteRiders and the Dane County Voter ID Coalition that aims to spread awareness of the new voter ID law passed in February. Senate Bill 295, which passed in early February, mandates that citizens must have a valid Wisconsin state ID, which includes driver’s licenses or state-issued voter IDs, in order to vote.

Firefighters rescued two sleeping Madison residents Tuesday night, as a fire filled their apartment, according to a Madison Fire Department daily report. Responders rushed to Magnolia Lane after a concerned apartment resident reported they thought they detected smoke in the basement.

Teenager visiting for state wrestling tournament assaulted near campus

Exhibit featuring prison art to be displayed at Madison Public Library Thursday

Madison Police Department recruits to start field training in March

The streets of Madison will see 23 new police recruits in early March for field training, after more than five months and nearly 900 hours of training, according to a Madison Police Department statement. The state requires 720 hours of training before recruits can begin field training, which MPD exceeds.

Madison police arrest three 14-year-old girls for battery

The Madison Police Department use a video from a Facebook page to arrest three 14-year-old girls on battery charges Tuesday, according to an incident report. The 34-year-old mother of one of the girls was among those battered in the fight.

The fire occurred on the west side of town and was put out safely, with no injuries.

Madison Fire Department fights Shorewood Hills home fire

Madison firefighters put out a fire on the 3500 block of Blackhawk Drive early Thursday morning, after a neighbor reported seeing bright lights in the basement they said they thought to be flames. After completing an exterior examination of the house around 6 a.m., firefighters determined the fire was on the first and second floor, according to a Madison Fire Department daily report. Firefighters entered the house to find thick black smoke and zero visibility.

The domestic homicide is the second in less than a month and also the second in 2016.

Madison Police declare death investigation second homicide of 2016

The Madison Police Department has detained a suspect in the domestic homicide of a 24-year-old woman, according to an incident report. The woman was found dead in her Calypso Road apartment Tuesday after her family asked officers to check on her welfare. The detained suspect is the victim's 39-year-old boyfriend.

Leon Varjian died of a heart attack in September, but left behind a lasting legacy in Madison of “creativity and joy.”
