Soglin announces proposal for 2017 budget

In an attempt to tackle issues such as recidivism, racial disparities and violence in Madison, Mayor Paul Soglin announced a $299.5 million operating budget proposal Tuesday. Highlights of the 2017 plan include a $15 minimum wage for all city employees, an overall pay increase for almost all employees and a $400,000 action plan focused on racial disparities. After years of debate between Soglin and the Common Council over a new Midtown police district and a Southeast side fire station, the new budget has put the projects on hold in order to limit increases in city spending.

MPD arrests five in relation to McDivitt Road shooting

Officers were told Friday several people were in the area of Hanson Road and Portage Road. “When officers stopped the vehicle multiple subjects fled into the nearby wooded area.

Parisi announces 2017 budget proposal

Dane County Executive Joe Parisi announced his nearly $584 million 2017 budget Thursday, highlighting initiatives to combat homelessness, opiate use and mental health. Parisi created an initiative in his 2014 budget that brought mental health crisis teams to local schools to work with kids, parents and teachers.

Woman linked to multiple robberies in Madison area

Madison Police Department officers and detectives are linking a 38-year-old woman to a series of robberies in the Madison area over the past few days, according to Madison Police Department incident reports. Sunday evening the woman, armed with a handgun, allegedly robbed the Pan & Pan bakery on East Washington Avenue.

Driver escapes burning car with child

A Madison woman, her child and a male passenger were able to escape her Chrysler 300 while driving on Northport Drive Sunday morning before it burst into flames. “While driving down Northport Drive, the occupants heard some crackling coming from the trunk of the car."

Dane County Board of Supervisors District Five, which is made up mostly of campus and Lake Mendota, could change following the 2020 census under the new commission.

County opts for citizen-led redistricting

In an effort to get politics out of the the process of redistricting, the Dane County Board has approved creation of an independent citizens commission to draw political boundaries after the 2020 census. The new commission will be modeled after a method used for congressional and legislative district drawing in Iowa, according to a county press release.

Police look for Gorham battery spree suspects

Madison police officers are looking for two to three suspects related to a series of battery incidents that occurred early in the Sunday morning. The first incident took place around 1:15 a.m. Sunday, in an apartment building on the 200 block of West Gorham Street.
