Man shot near State Street, suspects at large
By Gina Heeb | Dec. 21, 2016A man was shot in the arm near State Street early Wednesday morning, with police still searching for suspects. The 36-year-old victim was taken to a local emergency room with non-life-threatening injuries, according to a Madison Police Department incident report. The shooting happened around 2 a.m.

Alec Cook to be released from jail Friday after posting bail

Madison police chief says city has no plans to tighten immigration policies under Trump
By Gina Heeb | Dec. 11, 2016Madison Police Department Chief Mike Koval said Sunday on a Wisconsin talk show that city law enforcement will uphold its current inclusive immigration policies in months to come, despite not being a formal sanctuary city. “We will not be using our local authority to sort of hunt down folks based on immigration or documentation issues,” Koval said on a WISN news program.

Dane County hires national firm to run events at Alliant Energy Center

Cook’s lawyers request for his release from jail
By Miller Jozwiak | Dec. 8, 2016The lawyers of Alec Cook, who is being charged with the alleged sexual assault of five women, are requesting he be released on signature bond rather than the the $200,000 bail on which he is currently in jail. He should be released because prosecutors haven't shown that bail is required to assure that Cook will appear in court, according to the Wisconsin State Journal. Cook’s attorneys, Chris Van Wagner and Jessa Nicholson, wrote in a bail motion that prosecutors are citing the seriousness of the charges for the bail being so high. Cook’s preliminary hearing was scheduled for Dec. 27, but prosecutors requested the date be moved back due to case detectives not being able to make the hearing. Cook’s lawyers agreed to the delay, Assistant District Attorney Colette Sampson said when she made the request.

Suspect at large in Five Guys pants fraud
By Noah Habenstreit | Dec. 6, 2016A man reportedly swindled a UW-Madison student out of two expensive pairs of pants during a transaction at Five Guys on State Street last week. After the student posted on Facebook’s Marketplace Community advertising designer jeans for sale, the suspect, who claimed to be from Baraboo, offered $100 for each pair.

‘Anti-Trump’ slogans found on truck engulfed in flames
By Miller Jozwiak | Dec. 5, 2016A parked truck that was engulfed in flames on the 1600 block of South Park Street had slogans against President-elect Donald Trump spray painted on it, according to a Madison Police Department incident report. Several pedestrians called in the fire just before midnight Friday.

Fire in Uncommon displaces 10 residents
By Miller Jozwiak | Dec. 1, 2016A fire on the fourth floor of the downtown highrise Uncommon displaced 10 residents Wednesday, according to a Madison Fire Department daily report. “An automatic sprinkler activation kept the fire contained to the room of origin, which suffered smoke and fire damage,” MFD Public Information Officer Cynthia Schuster wrote.

Water well near campus reaches contamination threshold
By Miller Jozwiak | Nov. 30, 2016A well that pumps more than 750 million gallons of water near the UW-Madison campus has reached a “critical contamination threshold” of sodium and chloride due to road salt, with chloride levels doubling since 2000. The Madison Water Utility is launching a multi-year study of Utility Well 14 in response to explore ways to mitigate road salt contamination.

Dane County prepares for election recount
By Jake Skubish | Nov. 29, 2016The Dane County Clerk’s Office is preparing for a massive recount effort after Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein ordered a recount in Wisconsin. “All of the ballots are being delivered from the counties, and they’re being sorted and locked in a room to get ready for the recount,” said Dane County Clerk Scott McDonell.

MPD warns against increased levels of car theft in winter months
By Noah Habenstreit | Nov. 29, 2016In the aftermath of a recent car theft, the Madison Police Department urged residents to exercise caution. An unknown perpetrator recently stole a 2000 Chevrolet Impala after the owner of the car left it unattended, unlocked and running in her driveway, according to an MPD incident report. The theft took place last week on the 3700 block of School Road near Dane County Regional Airport.

SUV found submerged in Lake Mendota, one body recovered
By Miller Jozwiak | Nov. 28, 2016A Dane County woman’s body was the only one found in or near an SUV submerged in Lake Mendota near the Spring Harbor Park boat launch. Dane County Medical Examiner Director of Operations Barry Irmen identified the victim as Julie B. Metcalfe of Fitchburg Monday night. She was 51. According to the Madison Fire Department, around 7:30 a.m. Monday the report of the submerged SUV came in.

Man breaks glass over victim's head in Red Rock Saloon

CrossFit games coming to Madison

Parisi signs 2017 budget with property tax raise

Credit card skimmer found near campus
