Former major league baseball commissioner to speak at UW winter commencement

Former MLB commissioner and Milwaukee Brewers founder Allan “Bud” Selig will give the commencement speech for UW-Madison’s winter graduating class in December. Selig, a Milwaukee native, founded the Milwaukee Brewers in 1970 and served as Commissioner of Baseball from 1992 until his retirement in 2015. He graduated from UW-Madison in 1956 with a bachelor’s degree in American history and political science.

Slow Food UW broadens access to food by expanding free meal requests online

Charlie Koczela, Executive Director of Slow Food UW, is hoping a new online free meal request platform launched last Tuesday will help build those alleyways, and that the expansion will make the Pay it Forward initiative more accessible for more people. Monday’s Family Dinner Night event will mark the first dinner where guests will be able to request free meals in advance.

The athletic department released the results of its health and safety survey Friday, saying their findings will help them make future facility improvements.

Poor facility security listed as a top concern among UW-Madison student athletes

In addition to worries over facility security, students and staff also expressed concern about student athletes’ access to health care, including mental health care, and reporting protocol. The results, which were gathered by Assistant Athletic Director Walter Dickey per the request of UW Director of Athletics Barry Alvarez, will help the department prioritize programming improvements in coming years.

According to a recent survey of UW-Madison students, faculty and staff, over 8 in 10 support a 100 percent tobacco-free campus.

UW-Madison students, faculty support tobacco-free campus

Many UW-Madison students, faculty and staff are in support of a tobacco-free campus, according to a recent survey. A Tobacco-Free Columbia-Dane County Coalition survey distributed in October 2017, in partnership with Public Health Madison and Dane County and the UW-Madison SPARK organization, found that 81 percent of student respondents support the campus going tobacco-free.

Chancellor Rebecca Blank said Wednesday that her hopes were high that students would be able to return to campus in the fall.

Blank will not be called to re-testify in NCAA antitrust trial

UW-Madison Chancellor Rebecca Blank may be recalled to testify in a National Collegiate Athletic Association antitrust trial after her testimony and a university statement conflicted. Last week, Blank was a witness in a case brought against the NCAA by Division I student-athletes to determine whether the NCAA can limit compensation for athletes to the full cost of their attendance fees.
