With interest I read Sarah Wieckert's article about Charlie Mohr
[""Wisconsin's beloved boxer takes final hit,"" Fall Farewell Issue
2006]. I was the neurosurgeon who attended to Mohr when he was
brought to University Hospital. In 1998, I retired from the
Department of Neurosurgery at the UW after being on the
neurosurgery faculty for 45 and a half years and serving as its
chairman for 33 and a half years.

In the wake of recent abductions and sexual assaults on campus,
many students have developed concern about getting home safely from
late exams and nights spent at the library. SAFEride services are
one way to get home safely, but the limited hours and response time
have students frustrated.

As I sat in class last Thursday I could feel the migraine
coming. Like a damsel in distress, I was tied to the tracks as a
freight train rushed toward me. There was nothing I could do to
save myself. I dropped my pen and stopped taking notes. It hit me
like a hatchet blow to the right side of my head.

After a strong debut effort, most bands fear the
momentum-killing sophomore slump. As Austin, Texas based ...And You
Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead proved, however, deferring
critical disappointment for several albums can be even more
damaging. From their promising self-titled debut to its grandiose
follow-up ""Madonna"" and the superb, apocalyptic ""Source Tags and
Codes,"" Trail of Dead rode a wave of near-unanimous critical
approval. Consequently, when the wave broke on 2005's disappointing
Worlds Apart, the resulting shock left the band with no clear
direction forward and very little on which to build.

Gov. Jim Doyle and Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J. held a conference
call yesterday afternoon to discuss the future of Wisconsin's State
Children's Health Insurance Program. Many states across the nation
are facing immediate funding needs in order to continue this
program, due to a projected shortfall of approximately $888
million.
