Some time ago, a friend of mine took issue with a comment I made
about Madison's sometimes testy relationship with its business
community, disputing my claim that the city could be less than
friendly towards many of its economic engines from time to time.
Recently I found my exhibit A in the trials of the proposed Badger
Hall of Fame Grill from Scott Acker, owner of the Quaker Steak and
Lube restaurant in Middleton, who had planned to open a restaurant
in University Square. But now it is doubtful the restaurant will
ever open, due to the intense hassle Acker has had to go through to
open its doors.

Ever since It Happened One Night"" pratfell into American hearts
in 1934, it seems practically everything that can be done in a
romantic comedy has been. Not since the works of Woody Allen and
Cameron Crowe in the late '80s and mid-'90s has there really been
any evolution in the genre, leaving rom-coms at a point where their
success almost entirely depends on their ability to sweet talk the
audience. Fortunately, director Marc Webb definitely knows how to
charm with his debut film ""(500) Days of Summer,"" in which he has
created characters whom you love to spend time with and a world you
love to spend time in (and considering that world is Los Angeles,
that is one hell of an achievement).

Anybody who has ever walked past the Edgewater Hotel near
Langdon Street could tell you that it has probably lost a bit of
its original luster. Currently valued at approximately $5.2
million, the Edgewater is far from extravagant. The building is now
over 60 years old, and with that age comes a rather musty aura -
and not a classic post-war nostalgic aura, more so an aura akin to
your grandmother's unrenovated basement.

Ladies and gentlemen, I have come to you today to address the
state of the UW freshmen, and today I can tell you the state of the
UW freshmen is strong.

With the Wisconsin Film Festival long wrapped up and the summer
blockbuster season emerging, it would seem that there is a dearth
of independent film out at the moment. But this weekend independent
film will be taking over the Memorial Union Play Circle as the
Wisconsin Union Directorate hosts its first Mini-Indie Film
Festival, showing a collection of films made outside the glitz and
glamour of Hollywood.

This past February, the students of UW-Madison had a chance to
bring change to Associated Students of Madison. A brand new
constitution was put before the campus in the hopes of making the
organization relevant once again, structured to make ASM's
leadership more accountable and more closely connected to
students.

In 2007, the teen comedy ""Superbad"" became a certifiable
phenomenon. One of the most popular high school movies in years, it
was quoted ad nauseum and made a cultural icon out of a lovable
loser known famously as ""McLovin.""

The spy thriller is a pretty simple genre. Throw in some
tension, a little backstabbing and a clever twist at the end and
the flick should be pretty fun. That's one of the reasons why
""Duplicity,"" the new espionage tale from ""Michael Clayton""
director and ""Bourne Ultimatum"" screenwriter Tony Gilroy, looked
like such an enjoyable spy romp. But somewhere along the line,
Gilroy forgot to inject the fun into what should have been a
happy-go-lucky movie.

Let's create a hypothetical situation. Say you're in some sort
of trouble. Perhaps you ran your moped into the Abe statue, and
Biddy Martin isn't fond of Lincoln's new tire-track look. This
doesn't look particularly good for you, but surely you've got a
good explanation for your recent breach of UW protocol. Good thing
you've got due process and the opportunity to sort this whole mess
out, right?

Be afraid, the new ASM constitution is coming to get you.

In a country with a limited history like the United States,
truly fascinating figures are few and far between. This may be why
the American people show such immense curiosity about former
president Richard Nixon, one of the most Shakespearean characters
this country has ever produced.

Every election season, politicians have a tendency to alter
their stances on hot-button issues in a shallow attempt to pander
to the electorate. In contrast, Hollywood tends to go in the
opposite direction, churning out scathing, hardcore political
material. Oliver Stone appears to have forgotten this tradition, as
his latest film, W."" - a biopic about America's current lame-duck
president (played by Josh Brolin) - raises the question of how the
creator of such controversial fare as ""JFK"" and ""Natural Born
Killers"" could create something so bland and toothless.
