This past Friday, I had the opportunity to take a trip to Oak
Hill Correctional Institution, a minimum-security prison located in
nearby Oregon, Wis. Now, I know what you're thinking: minimum
security? Thoughts of that Simpsons episode with the escalators
over the prison walls and revolving doors immediately come to mind.
And they did for me too. But what I witnessed while at Oak Hill
made me think twice about the way Wisconsin deals with its prison
population.

The economic crisis that this country is experiencing doesn't

Beth Orton could easily sound awful. Her genre-jumping mix of
folk, electronica, jazz and more could fail on a number of levels,
but it almost never does, allowing her to spin affecting,
melancholy songs that rarely miss the mark. She first gained
attention in the electronic sphere, collaborating with William
Orbit and providing the vocals on the Chemical Brothers track
\Alive: Alone."" She soon struck out on a solo career and gained
heavy critical praise with her debut, Trailer Park, and the
remarkably assured sophomore album, Central Reservation.

With a crazy week in which Wisconsin's police charges and
arrests of players made the news as often as the games and
practices themselves, it seems only fitting that the Badgers (1-5
Big Ten, 6-5 overall) played an equally crazy game, falling at home
to the Illini 37-20. In a match-up against Illinois (3-3, 4-6) that
resulted in seven turnovers, both teams' running backs provided the
only stability in the game.

Emeritus Economics Professor W. Lee Hansen recently claimed in a
Wisconsin State Journal guest column that students of color are
under-qualified and over-represented on the UW-Madison campus.
Hansen's remarks are not only extremely narrow-minded and painful
to read, they are also rooted in a larger pattern on campus in
which the voices of men and women of color, LGBT students and white
women have been silenced and ignored.
