While most students head to cars, buses and airports and head
home for a relaxing winter break, the Wisconsin men's basketball
team's season trudges on with three more nonconference games,
followed by the beginning of its Big Ten schedule.

Rarely do the Badgers' travels take the team north, but that is
where they they head tonight as the men's basketball team gets
ready to face UW-Green Bay.

This time of year, everyone argues about how great it would be
for NCAA football to use a playoff system, like the NFL does. But
nobody asks themelves ""what if the NFL borrowed the postseason
system from the college game?"" Maybe it's the NFL that has to
reconsider its postseason structure, not college football. I figure
if the NFL adopted the bowl system, we'd have a pretty exciting
postseason. Here's how it would shape up this year.

Perhaps the most fascinating element of the Big Ten-ACC
Challenge is the contrast between the two conferences. ACC fans
laud the conference for its high-scoring and up-tempo offensive
contests, while the Big Ten prides itself on its defensive
toughness and its fundamental emphasis.

Die-hard Badger fans have had tonight's game circled on their
calendars since last April, when the matchups for the 11th Big
Ten-ACC Challenge were announced. And now the day has come: Tonight
Wisconsin welcomes perennial powerhouse Duke into the Kohl
Center.

Typically at this point in the season, the NFL playoff picture
is getting clearer with each passing week. This season, however,
that trend is only holding true in one conference. The NFC playoff
picture is taking shape with both Green Bay and Philadelphia
winning last week to improve to 7-4 to separate themselves from the
6-5 Giants and Falcons. It's pretty certain the final five weeks
will be a battle between these four teams for the two wild-card
spots, with Green Bay and Philadelphia in the driver's seat.

We've just crossed the hump of the NFL season. After figuring
out where teams were in the first half of the season, most have now
found their identity and are either positioning themselves for the
playoffs, a wild card race or a draft pick. Each and every NFL
season presents its unique aspects, so here is what I've thought of
the first half or so of the year.

If the Badgers had to circle a mid-major opponent on their
schedule, this would be the one.
(11/13/09 6:00am)
Wisconsin finally kicks off its regular season Sunday against
Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne at home. The
Badgers played in the annual red-white scrimmage and two exhibition
games, and will now play when it counts.

On UW-Superior's first possession, junior forward Jake Smith
sent a high, inaccurate pass to junior forward Marcus Helland, who
made the catch, hung in the air and banked it home to complete the
alley-oop, sending oo's and ah's through the Kohl Center. But it
was all downhill from there for the Yellowjackets, as Wisconsin
cruised to an 80-47 preseason win.
(11/10/09 6:00am)
Wisconsin wraps up its exhibition schedule tonight against an
in-state rival. Not Marquette, not UW-Milwaukee, not even UW-Green
Bay. Instead, UW-Superior will travel from the northern tip of
Wisconsin to Madison to face the Badgers.

Being a displaced sports fan creates many annoying situations.
You hear a lot more about the hometown teams than you want to, you
get a lot of biases about how good the local teams are and you're
stuck watching Packers-Lions on Sunday afternoons instead of a good
game.
(11/05/09 6:00am)
Wisconsin travels to Indiana to take on the Hoosiers, and Penn
State and Ohio State match up for an important conference game this
week in the Big Ten.
(11/04/09 6:00am)
The Badgers begin their two-game preseason schedule tonight at
home against Bemidji State.

It has become a total cliché this time of the college football
season to begin to clamor for a playoff system. So I'm not going to
waste anyone's time discussing the down sides of the bowl system
and the benefits of a playoff.
(10/29/09 6:00am)
The conference race is heating up and teams are beginning to
battle for bowl game positioning as the Big Ten surpasses its
halfway point in the schedule.

Last night the NBA season kicked off, and while I'm excited to
see how it plays out, there is one major weakness that none of the
other ""big three"" sports have: professional basketball does not
have real rivalries.
(10/22/09 6:00am)
The Wisconsin men's basketball team held its media day
Wednesday, at which head coach Bo Ryan and his players reflected on
their 2008-'09 season and looked ahead to this one.
(10/22/09 6:00am)
Wisconsin is on a bye this week, but all the other teams in the
conference are in action, setting up five Big Ten games for week
eight.
(10/20/09 6:00am)
When I would watch the NBA playoffs last spring, one of my
favorite parts of the coverage was the ""wired"" segments from TNT
and ESPN in which the networks would show three or four clips,
mostly of head coaches yelling at their players or talking strategy
with them during a timeout.
