When I came to college, I imagined my GPA would be based on a
few familiar methods of grading. I'd be taking exams that assessed
my strengths and weaknesses in the subject, in addition to the
occasional lengthy, rambling essay in which I would use a thesaurus
to sound like either the guy sitting in the front row or an 18th
century philosopher, whichever seemed more appropriate. After all,
for the preceding decade that was precisely my academic
experience.

When my teams are underdogs, I tend to spend the days leading up
to the game imagining several different scenarios under which the
good guys prevail. These scenarios include (but are definitely not
limited to) last minute buzzer beaters, record-breaking individual
performances and even an occasional improbable game-winning Hail
Mary from the third string walk-on quarterback.

If there's one thing that journalists love talking about, it's
themselves. Most journalists relish the opportunity to talk
endlessly about all the theories regarding their profession. At
times it may alienate readers with profession-specific jargon, but
I can assure you that no writer ever does it on purpose.

I can't help but notice these days that everyone is out walking
their dogs. I can't even go outside without seeing a friendly
canine, and why not? Dogs offer companionship and fun, and from
what I've gleaned from conversations they're huge chick
magnets.

ballot, which appropriated funds giving limited-term employees a
wage increase.

UW-Madison representatives met the press Thursday to respond to
allegations of a security breach at the nuclear reactor laboratory
in the Engineering Research Building this summer by two interns
posing as prospective students. ABC News sent the interns as part
of an investigation into the safety of the nation's research
reactors, and the report concluded there existed a tremendous
threat of possible terrorist attacks.
