Wisconsin vs. Minnesota, it is already the marquee rivalry for both schools, but when something as rare as an outdoor game is added to the mix, the series becomes something even more special.
As I sat in my apartment Saturday afternoon, having just watched Ben Brust’s half-court prayer send the Wisconsin-Michigan game into overtime, I tried to remember the last time I was this excited by a sporting event—any sporting event. When was the last time that a play literally made me jump out of my seat and start jumping up and down while yelling myself horse?
Coming off its first series without a win since Dec. 7-8, the Wisconsin men’s hockey team (8-6-6 WCHA, 11-9-6 overall) will look to rebound this weekend as it hosts Bemidji State (4-12-4, 5-16-5) at the Kohl Center.
An old, old cliché in sports says that “it is better to be lucky than good.” As antiquated as that notion seems to be, perhaps no team embodied that idea more than the 2012 Baltimore Ravens.
After skating to a 1-1 tie Friday night, the No. 19 Wisconsin men’s hockey team (8-6-6 WCHA, 11-9-6 overall) had a much rougher go Saturday against No. 7/8 North Dakota (9-5-6, 14-8-6). The Badgers saw their 11-game WCHA unbeaten streak snapped and one of their leaders carried off the ice in a 4-1 loss in Grand Forks, N.D.
In the midst of the now-forgotten NHL lockout, much was made about what player were and were not taking advantage of the time off by playing in other leagues. Those who played in the American Hockey League or Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League were expected to come in and set the score sheet ablaze, while those who hibernated over the 119-day lockout would need some time to re-adjust to game speed.
The Wisconsin men’s hockey team (8-5-5 WCHA, 11-8-5 overall) took another step toward the top of the WCHA conference this weekend with a sweep of conference foe Alaska-Anchorage (1-15-4, 3-16-5), but UW may have lost one of its key players in the process.
The No. 20 Wisconsin men’s hockey team (6-5-5 WCHA, 9-8-5 overall) will look to bounce back from their first loss in twelve games and continue their run up the WCHA standings when they host Alaska-Anchorage (1-13-4, 3-14-5) at the Kohl Center this weekend.
The Wisconsin men’s hockey team (2-5-5 WCHA, 3-7-5 overall) shot out of the gates against Alabama-Huntsville (3-13-1) Thursday, scoring two goals in the first 10 minutes of the game, en route to a 6-0 win.
The Wisconsin men’s hockey team (2-5-5 WCHA, 2-7-5 overall) is coming off of two straight ties against Michigan Tech last weekend, but the Badgers are still in search of their first home win of the season. The team will have one more chance before winter break as they host Alabama-Huntsville (3-12-1) in a rare Thursday/Friday series this week.
Coming off of an impressive three-point weekend on the road against Denver, the Wisconsin men’s hockey team (2-5-3 WCHA, 2-7-1 overall) is looking to continue turning their season around at home this weekend against Michigan Tech (3-6-1, 4-8-1).
Back on Nov. 7, things were not going well for the Wisconsin men’s hockey team. The Badgers were already coming off a home sweep at the hands of Colorado College to drag their record down to 1-4-1, when third-year assistant coach Bill Butters decided to leave the team in order to spend more time with his family and his ministry.
UPDATE: UW Athletic Director Barry Alvarez has issued a press release stating:
There are certain events in this world that make sports seem very insignificant. The actions taken by Jovan Belcher this past weekend fall into that category.
Things have not come easy this season for the Wisconsin men’s hockey team (1-5-2 WCHA, 1-7-2 overall), but the team will have a chance to right the ship this weekend in the same building where it saw its 2011-’12 season end—on the road against No. 5 Denver (7-1-0, 9-3-0).
After spending 14 years with the Wisconsin volleyball team, head coach Pete Waite announced he has decided to step down Monday effective immediately, according to the UW athletic department.
It’s had already been a rough couple of weeks for the Wisconsin men’s hockey team (1-5-2 WCHA, 1-7-2 overall) and things only got worse this weekend as the Badgers were swept at home by Minnesota State (3-5-0, 5-5-2) in consecutive 4-2 losses.
The Wisconsin men’s hockey team has hired former Badger Matt Walsh as an interim assistant coach to replace Bill Butters after his departure from the team earlier this month.
Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: The Big Ten is expanding. Wait, didn’t it just add Nebraska to make an even 12-team conference, complete with two divisions and a championship game? If you thought that would be enough, it looks like you were sorely mistaken.
