While watching the news last week, I learned about a secretly
gay man who held an esteemed position in a shadowy guild. Upon
hearing this, I immediately thought it must be another Republican
scandal. Imagine my surprise when I learned that it was not, in
fact, some high ranking official from the GOP, but an ancillary
character from a children's book series. Not to sound crass, but
who gives a damn?

Ben Franklin once said, Those who would give up essential
liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither
liberty nor safety. Choose freedom."" He said this as he defied the
imposing British imperial power, which controlled most of the known
world at the time.

When I think of problems with BlackWater, National Guard
peacekeepers, infrastructure, money mismanagement, corporate
overcharging and unchecked violence, I generally think of
Iraq.

Mother Teresa, the tiny Albanian woman who spent her life
working with the poorest of the poor,"" is in the news again (and
no, she isn't in a custody battle or in trouble for stealing OJ's
memorabilia). In 1998, Pope John Paul II raised a few eyebrows when
he put her on the fast track to sainthood just one year after her
death, but it is the most recent revelation about her that is
causing a torrent of controversy in the theological world.

Despite the fact that nearly 70 percent of the United States'
citizens disagreed with the decision, in August President George
Bush commuted Scooter Libby's two-year prison sentence. In doing
so, Bush literally saved Libby's ass. Libby is still required to
pay $250,000, but I doubt he will be missing any meals. By
comparison, I think it is worth noting that Bill Belichick had to
pay $500,000 for cheating at football. Even though I have a fair
amount of animosity toward the New England Patriots, I think we can
all see that perhaps Libby got off a bit easier than he should
have.

As seen in The New York Times, Counterinsurgency is, by
definition, a competition between insurgents and counterinsurgents
for the control and support of a population. To believe that
Americans, with an occupying force that long ago outlived its
reluctant welcome, can win over a recalcitrant local population and
win this counterinsurgency is far-fetched.""

Being a college student is great. Who else spend most of their
formative years drinking beer and doing as many drugs as the
average touring funk band, fumbling through oral presentations and,
let's not forget the sweetest plum, working only seven months a
year? Hint: Get your answer at the end of this article.

I am a journalist now! For those of you that read last week's
Cardinal, this is old news. To everyone else, welcome to the fold.
I like to think of myself as one part Andy Rooney's disjointed and
rambling musings combined with the malcontented disposition
(fittingly enough) of a badger.

Unless you've been living under a rock for the last four years,
you probably know that the United States is engaged in a costly and
troubling war in Iraq.
