The No. 16 Wisconsin men’s swimming and diving team starts national championship action Wednesday night at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Ga. In March 2012, Cannon Clifton and Brett Pinfold, competing on different teams and living on opposite sides of Houston, Texas, were at Texas A&M lining up a couple lanes away from each other to race in the finals of the 100-yard butterfly at a sectional meet. Four years later, the two Texans pushed each other to their limits at a recent afternoon practice at the University of Wisconsin leading up to the NCAA National Swimming and Diving Championships.

When the results for the 200-yard freestyle preliminaries came out Friday morning, it was pretty easy to say that Brett Pinfold and his teammates were excited. Coming into this past week’s Big Ten Championships at the University of Michigan, many teams did not really know what to expect from the UW women’s swim team. Last year, the Badgers graduated sprinter Ivy Martin, who contributed to six event wins in 2015. This year, Martin proved to be tough to replace, but a solid group of up and coming swimmers helped the Badgers take home a hard-fought sixth-place finish.

When you’re a Division I athlete, it’s pretty rare to have even a single teammate from your high-school club team on the same college roster. Having five of your teammates come from the same club team? It’s practically unheard of. Women’s swimmers Abby Jagdfeld, Rachel Johnson, Anna Meinholz, Molly Manchon and Madison Tew have been teammates for quite a bit longer than most—in fact, they all swam for coach Blaine Carlson at Waukesha Express since most of them were about nine or 10 years old until they came to college.
