'The Da Vinci Code' is undeniably one of the most popular yet
controversial books of our time. It brings the mysterious life of
Jesus, and religious controversy in general, to a place where it
has not been since Mel Gibson's 'The Passion of the Christ''the
silver screen.

In my last hurrah as a columnist, I must make something clear to
my dear readers. Though I may not slap a yellow ribbon sticker on
the back of my vehicle, and I may not support the war in Iraq or
the administration that started it, I certainly support our troops.

My fellow Americans, let us pretend for a moment that the
debacle in leadership currently befalling our country is not one of
the greatest administrative blunders since the Watergate scandal a
generation ago. Grisly loss of humanity, violated personal freedom
of citizens, shady uses of presidential power and billions of
dollars in military debt aside, the caricatures from the Bush
administration in the pathetically planned war in Iraq play more
like the plot of a box office-flopping Hollywood farce on a
blundering attempt to govern gone terribly wrong.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness month, but I guess the Madison
Police Department and the local press didn't get the memo. While
highlighting that sexual assaults occur, both entities have ignored
the real reasons rape exists.

I always thought scientific research a noble pursuit—working for
the greater good of society, curing diseases, patenting findings to
make the world a healthier place. And even though I have never
ventured into a lab at the UW-Madison, I was proud to attend one of
the top-ranked research universities in the country, for good
reasons.

Students have been in an uproar lately about how their money on
campus is spent. Whether it is WUFIP, the Living Wage referendum or
Associated Students of Madison elections, students at UW-Madison
are careful to track where each cent of their precious segregated
fees will be distributed.

People have commented that it takes courage for a college
student to bluntly state their view of the world in a newspaper
column with the possibility of public backlash. However, what my
colleagues and I do each week is hardly comparable to the courage
displayed by oppressed journalists throughout the world, such as
Cuban journalist Guillermo Farinas.

Running for the Dane County Board of Supervisors has provided
several students the distinct advantage of learning first-hand how
political campaigns work. Congratulations must be given to Ashok
Kumar: The frontrunner in last Tuesday's primary election not only
ran away with the vote, but mastered the difficult campaign tactics
of sleaze and bullying from the shadier side of politics.

Before the XX Olympic Winter Games began, the American
mainstream got its first taste of skiing sensation Bode Miller by
witnessing a press conference last month in which he brazenly
claimed to have competed in past events while under the influence
of alcohol.

A measure initially brainstormed by the Medical College of
Wisconsin to promote traffic safety for children passed the state
Senate and is now only a governor's signature away from requiring
all children ages eight or younger to sit in a booster seat while
riding in a motor vehicle.

Feb. 8 is National Congenital Heart Lobby day. Though sometimes
hereditary, 35 different congenital heart defects generally are not
a result of any human action. Rather, the fetus' heart does not
properly fuse together during gestation.

How's that New Year's weight loss resolution going for you? The
overly common premise of television commercials this time of year
contains the typically chubby American scrambling to the nearest
Bally's with hope of banishing that flabby physique. While these
advertisements can be a source of motivation for individuals with a
slowing metabolism and sedentary lifestyle, the unequally
distributed and improperly focused television ads for weight loss
are vastly ineffective, and bordering on sexist.

The war in Iraq and the battle over gay rights were two of the
top issues of 2005. Making headlines now, however, is a religious
group so overzealous in its beliefs that it has confused and
combined the two issues into offensive and misguided protests at
the funerals of fallen soldiers.

Although I am a full supporter of the right to free speech and
freedom of the press, there are instances when indecency and
inappropriateness of printed material crosses the line'one of which
is a particular discussion of rape.

The Barrows scandal brought a powerful person's sexual past into
the limelight once again. The accusations make for interesting news
fodder as promiscuity takes the front page. While necessary to
report, each scandal that has happened in recent years has left an
impact on the impressionable mind of college students en route to
maturity. We are the generation that grew up watching coverage of
the Clinton scandal. Sex has always been a glaringly open part of
culture as we know it.

A memorable scene in the movie \Mona Lisa Smile"" occurs when at
a 1950s private, east coast women's college, a student about to
graduate decides to forego Yale Law School for marriage and a
family. In historical context, this woman's decision seems
acceptable, yet not as desirable in today's society. However, a
similar sickening trend is appearing in our nation's highly
regarded educational institutions, threatening to reverse the
advancements made toward gender equality in the last few
decades.

Bells rang out in St. Peter's Square Tuesday as faithful all
over the world rejoiced in the election of Joseph Cardinal
Ratzinger as the 265th Supreme Pontiff of the Roman Catholic
Church. Not surprisingly, the College of Cardinals chose an
elderly, conservative European, who is rumored to be a
\transitional pope,"" as the new leader.

Vandalism is not something that mature, college-aged
intellectuals usually deal with. While sidewalk-chalk activism and
political propaganda bombardment are omnipresent and often
obnoxious, there is a serious and also illegal form of voicing
one's views: inappropriately placing them in the bathroom stalls of
College Library.

UW-Madison is highly regarded as a physically active and
athletic community, and it's no secret that the UW football and
basketball teams are among the best in the country. Yet when it
comes to the average student's opportunity for physical fitness,
the Southeast Recreational Facility's hours and policies leave
students yearning rather than burning from a great workout.
