Everybody's favorite blue Sesame Street monster who inhales tons
of cookies will soon become a more health-conscious American
citizen. That's right, Cookie Monster is going on a diet. Don't
worry, he will not be eating low-carb bread, bunless hamburgers or
whatever stupid Atkins-friendly options there are nowadays.
Instead, he will be decreasing his cookie intake and will
incorporate fruits and vegetables into his daily food regimen.
Cookies will no longer be \an anytime food,"" but rather ""a
sometimes food.""

As a kid, my family and I would often go to my grandma's house
for dinner because, being Italian, she always insisted on cooking
for us. She prepared her famous salad with every meal and would ask
me if I wanted any, even though every single time I declined. It
was a sort of ritual I guess. Then, she would go on to say,
\Katrina, if you don't eat your salad, you won't have a beautiful
complexion!""

Whenever I go home, to visit my family there is only one thing I
look forward to more than sleeping in a warm, bug and mouse-free
house: opening up a fully stocked fridge.

What does it mean to be a fast-food restaurant? Does it entail
cheap food prices? Fast service? Offering fatty and high caloric
foods? Picking up your meal at the counter instead of being served?
Having a \for here or to go"" option? I would have to say that all
of these are pretty good indicators of a typical fast-food
chain.

Everyone is familiar with the first dinner date experience; it's
awkward, nerve-racking and sometimes so boring that you begin to
ponder stabbing your eye with a fork to liven things up a bit. To
make matters worse, choosing a meal is no simple task. This process
is comparable to writing a ten-page paper an hour before it's
due-very hard and nearly impossible. There are so many unofficial
rules you must follow when deciding the appropriate entr??e to
order it is amazing people can even have successful first
dates.

Recently I came across an appalling article from several
different news sources-Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, located in
Atlantic City, N.J., has officially made it a requirement for their
cocktail waitresses and bartenders to maintain a certain weight.
Otherwise these employees will face up-to 90 days of unpaid
probation. During this time, they can be put on a weight-loss
program paid for by Borgata and attempt to lose the extra weight.
If they do not succeed in doing so, they will be fired.

I have been a victim of the freshman 15 (well, actually the
freshman 10). I know how it goes. Food lurks around every corner
and one's main source of exercise comes from walking to the fridge
to get more food, down the hall to eat some of your neighbor's
food, or down to the cafeteria to indulge in even more food.

Larry B's is a little diner at 617 State Street, where the
former Tokyo Express used to reside. They serve breakfast, lunch
and dinner and are open from 7 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays through
Fridays, Saturdays 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Sunday 9 a.m. to close.
Their grand opening was Feb. 8 but it was anything but \grand.""
When I walked inside the atmosphere was chaotic to say the least. I
noticed right away they had four people on staff---a waitress, a
busboy, a cook and the manager. All the tables were either full or
covered in dirty dishes when I arrived so I decided to clear a spot
at the bar (which wasn't any cleaner). I swept up bread crumbs and
pushed used silverware, napkins and dishes away from my area

The other day, my roommate Emily and I were planning on
preparing a very fancy gourmet birthday dinner for our other
roommate, Kristen. However, we faced one tiny problem; neither of
us knew how to cook. Emily disappointedly admitted that neither her
soy sauce-soaked spaghetti nor my marvelous mayonnaise sandwiches
would cut it.

Nothing is better than biting into a huge hot ham and cheese
hoagie that just oozes with goodness stuffed inside. Or a savory
hot roast beef sandwich piled high with mozzarella cheese, peppers
and au jus. But where can one find this kind of place on campus?
That's the problem--nowhere. Where I am from, these types of places
are like a Walgreen's or Starbucks and can be found on basically
any corner one happens to stumble upon. These are the kinds of
places that serve basically anything and everything, ranging from
hot sandwiches and burgers to hot dogs and gyros. If UW-Madison
would just add one of these places to State Street or somewhere on
campus, they would not only satisfy students' needs of getting
something quick to eat in between classes (besides fast food) it
would also cater to the masses around bar time.

I can't cook. I hate to admit it, but it's the sad truth. Well,
maybe not entirely. I did go through a few phases of cooking, one
of them being with eggs. Yes, I was a connoisseur of omelets and
proud of it. I would pour a carton of egg beaters into a pan,
ever-so-gracefully, and chop onions, tomatoes and mushrooms,
sprinkling them perfectly on one half. I was able to effortlessly
fold the other half of the egg over just right and, voila! All my
roommates were quite impressed with my new-found skill.

A few weeks ago, I found myself in my kitchen devouring a heap
of squishy chow claiming to be nothing less than Taste Sensations
Sesame Chicken. Lean Cuisine claims it consists of \breaded chicken
tenderloins in a tangy plum sauce topped with roasted sesame
seeds."" The first few bites were not so bad, maybe because I
wanted to believe the idealistic description of this frozen
delicacy. Yet, three bites into it, I found myself wanting to rid
my mouth of this overpowering tang flavor and run to a toilet to
spew out its remains. So much for Stouffer's Asian Style
Cuisine.
