Head coach Tony Granato is known for adjusting and switching up his offensive line pairing until he can find a combination that works. Whether it’s in-game adjustments or trying new pairings in practice, Granato always works to find a line that can gel and be dominant.

Throughout this 2016-17 campaign, the Badgers have often been plagued by defensive zone mishaps that have turned into uncontested goals for their opponents. Although Wisconsin has played much better in their defensive zone as of late, they have still had some stretches where their defensive zone coverage has been susceptible to breakdowns.

Eight minutes into the second period of Friday night’s game, Penn State dumped the puck into the Badgers’ zone on a seemingly harmless play. The puck, however, took a weird jump off the boards, bounced over freshman goalie Jack Berry’s stick, and found its way to Denis Smirnov right in front of the Badgers’ net for a goal that put the Nittany Lions up 3-2.

All season, the Badgers have prided themselves on their ability to adjust. Whether that comes in the form of changing lines mid-game or dressing different players on the fourth line and on defense, the Badgers have found a way to overcome adversity and often earn wins.

When freshmen hockey players step onto the Madison campus and the Kohl Center ice, quite a bit gets thrown at them all at once. This transition can have an effect on a player’s confidence, causing many freshmen to produce less than they are capable of early in their college hockey careers. For Wisconsin’s Max Zimmer, his freshman journey has embodied just that.

NEW YORK—After beating Ohio State Thursday, the Badgers not only had an opportunity to play a game in Madison Square Garden, but also had a chance to sweep the No. 8 Ohio State Buckeyes in the “World’s Most Famous Arena.” The game lived up to its hype: A furious late-game effort by the Buckeyes sent the contest to overtime, where Cameron Hughes scored the golden goal to send the Badgers’ home happy.

The Badgers are coming off maybe their most impressive weekend of hockey this season after splitting a home series against No. 6 Minnesota. They have built up both momentum and confidence in the last few weeks, and are now set to face off against another Top 10 team for the second weekend in a row, inching toward the top spot in the Big Ten Rankings.

For the second night in a row, and continuing a theme of the season, the Badgers had a slow start coming out of the locker room in the first period. Once the second period rolled around, however, it was like a completely new Wisconsin team on the ice. It wasn’t the x’s or the o’s; but, simply Wisconsin just did whatever they could to find a way.

Just one season ago, Minnesota traveled to the Kohl Center and easily won two games against Wisconsin, including a 9-2 beat down of a Badgers team that looked dejected with little confidence. As much as that loss hurt at the time, however, this new Badgers team, under a new coaching staff, feels much more prepared to not only keep the games close, but grab six points in the conference standings.

In the second game of their weekend series against Omaha, the Badgers outshot the Mavericks 44-27, scored four goals, held the edge in zone time, created chances and really played one of their better offensive games of the season.

Once again, the Badgers dug themselves into an early hole. Slow starts have plagued Wisconsin all season, and they have not been able to recover. Against both Boston College and No. 2 Denver last weekend, the Badgers crawled back from being down three to bring the contest within one, but could not claim that elusive comeback victory.

Since Tony Granato took over as head coach of the Badgers, the program has looked more energized and driven to succeed. From day one, their motto has been defined by a newfound hunger for success, and that work ethic has led them to becoming a much stronger team at this point in the season than even Granato himself thought that they would be.

In the third season of the NCAA’s College Football Playoff format, the same narratives seem to persist each season; namely, that no one can predict what will happen and, no matter what, there will be controversy surrounding who the CFP Committee selects to play for a national championship.

Wisconsin, who has shown the ability to play dominant hockey, especially offensively, has struggled to assert their dominance early. Plagued by slow starts for the majority of the year, the Badgers have emphasized putting the pressure on the opponent from the opening puck drop. Tonight, the Badgers did just that.

The game of hockey is naturally fast. The best players and the best teams play fast, but it is more than just speed that makes a team succeed. Teams must find a way to dictate their own pace and do the little things right.

After beating the U.S. National Team Development Program Under-18 team in an exhibition game last Friday, the Badgers head out east to face Clarkson (3-2-1) and St. Lawrence (3-3-0) on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
(10/24/16 5:06am)
As with most exhibition games, it’s hard to really take anything concrete away from the score alone. The Badgers (2-2-0) beat the United States National Team Development Program Under-18 (2-7-1 overall, 0-5-0 NCAA) 5-4 at the Kohl Center on Friday, which, in comparison with Minnesota’s (2-1-0) dominating 9-0 victory over the U.S., seems like a dismal effort. Still, even with a much more narrow score, the Badgers continued to learn about their team and took several positives away from the one goal win.
