UW-Madison illegally polluting? This is a headline few in
Madison would take with a grain of salt, but a Sierra Club lawsuit
filed last week alleges UW-Madison violated the Clean Air Act after
it failed to upgrade its Charter Street power and heating plant
with appropriate pollution controls.

After a few revisions and some much needed clarification, the
Madison City Council passed the textbook theft ordinance last week.
Misinterpretation due to confusion caused this editorial board to
originally oppose the ordinance. However, now that the language has
cleared up, we offer our support of the ordinance as
written.

Like taxes and brussel sprouts, no one likes the cable com- -
pany and a bill passed in the state Assembly seeks to solidify that
sentiment. On the surface, the proposal, SB 107 or AB 207, seeks to
eliminate local monopolies cable service providers hold over
Wisconsin's municipalities and turn oversight over to the state
government.

Nearly 30 years ago, in Niagara Falls, N.Y., a neighborhood
known as Love Canal faced an environmental health crisis. The newly
developed neighborhood was built on a toxic waste disposal site.
City officials did little to respond to the ailing residents,
leading former President Jimmy Carter to declare a federal
emergency in 1978.

In wake of the Virginia Tech tragedy, parents worry about their
children and whether UW-Madison would react appropriately if such a
dangerous event were to occur here. The UW-Madison system recently
started a review of the campus' current security policies and
instituted a plan to conduct future reviews to ensure that the
campus has a safety plan should one of any number of different
scenarios arise.

Much to our dismay, the downtown bar attrition plan gained
momentum April 19, as the Madison Downtown Coordinating Committee
voted 7-5 in favor of recommending the plan to the Alcohol License
Review Committee.

In his last hurrah on the City Council, Austin King proposed an
ordinance that would regulate the sales of used textbooks.
According to Ald. Mike Verveer, District 4, textbook theft is a
prevalent city problem and forcing stricter record keeping at
bookstores is the solution.

real end to a practice that has monopolized music and closed out

brutal sexual assault on the 500 block of University Avenue,

On April 11, 2007, the Senate passed a bill that would
potentially loosen restrictions on stem cell research. Following

Eli Judge's victory in the District 8 aldermanic election served
as another setback for Progressive Dane in the Madison City
Council. With a mere six seats in the council, Progressive Dane has
a much looser grip on local politics than in previous years and
faces an identity crisis.
