To call Dontrelle Willis a phenom is an understatement. So far
the Marlins ace is 20-8 with a 2.52 ERA in only his third major
league season. Folks, these are no ordinary stats for a 23-year old
pitcher. This is serious stuff. Willis is the fourth youngest man
ever to win 20 in the show (ex-Met and current DUI offender Dwight
Gooden is the youngest) and is only the 13th African American to do
so. Willis is on a staff with 2003 World Series hero Josh Beckett
and A.J. Burnett, both of whom are under 28. Assuming the Marlins
can avoid any encounters with Wayne Huizenga, this trio will make
for a more-than-solid foundation for years to come.

All season long the Badger offense has put up prodigious numbers
and drowned out opponents with vast quantities of runs. Tuesday's
doubleheader against Valparaiso was no different.

The top news of the day in UW men's tennis should be that the
team lost its eighth Big Ten match of the season and was eliminated
from the Big Ten tournament. Instead, Pat Klingelhoets, resigned as
head coach of the Badgers after a 23-year tenure.

The UW softball team (3-7 Big Ten, 15-19 overall) had the upper
hand of the twin bill they played against the Bison of North Dakota
State (18-23) Monday.

This year's spring depth chart for the Wisconsin Badger football
team can be quite deceiving.

There are nearly 800 student athletes here at the University of
Wisconsin-Madison. Eight hundred. That leaves 40,788 students who
do not have the type of everyday access to competitive sports that
they may have had in high school. So, like the other 40,787 of my
fellow students, I too must turn elsewhere for my fix.

It is not often that two players on the same team in the same
season chase an all-time record. When it does occur, however, it is
guaranteed to be an exciting time for fans and players alike. Like
Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle pursued the single-season home run
record together in 1961, UW softball catcher Boo Gillette and
shortstop Kris Zacher, both seniors, are making their run at a
prestigious record. Both teammates are tied for the UW all-time
home run record while the Badgers have just started their Big Ten
season. Clearly the record chase is good news for UW fans, but
after this weekend the softball team has even more good news for
Badger faithful. After four Big Ten games, the Badgers are 3-1 in
Big Ten play and are 12-12 overall.

The UW softball team is on an offensive tear, the likes of which
have not been seen in Madison in quite some time. With three
starters hitting over .320 this season, the Badgers have the
offensive punch that a Big Ten team needs to find success.

The No. 35 UW women's tennis team is on a roll so far this
season. It came from behind in both of its last two matches-and
last night, freshman Nicole Beck showed what coming from behind was
all about.

1 Can anyone challenge the Cardinals in the NL Central?
(03/15/05 6:00am)
This past weekend was full of buzzer-beaters, game winners and
heartbreakers for Badger athletics. In the midst of all the March
Madness, sometimes other sports fall to the wayside, but fans
should not let the UW men's track team fall out of sight.

The third time was a charm for the UW women's basketball team.
In the third straight meeting in the first round of the Big Ten
tournament-the last two ending in losses-between the Badgers and
the Indiana Hoosiers (3-13 Big Ten, 10-17 overall), the Badgers
pulled out a big win in a double-overtime thriller.
(02/18/05 6:00am)
The UW women's basketball team has had nights of brilliance and
nights of forgetfulness in the '05 season. Last night's loss to
Penn State was a night to forget.

The bad blood between the Badgers and the Gophers has existed
for years. In fact, the battle between the two furry mammals has
gone on for 113 years in Division I football.
(02/09/05 6:00am)
Club sports here at UW, like all over the country, are made up
of a group of guys who play for love of the game, with no promise
of scholarships, a pro career or even the slightest bit of
collegiate fame. When this same group of guys is competing at the
level of Division I varsity teams, someone needs to take
notice.

Traveling is tough on a team. Sometimes even a solid squad who
has won their last five of six games will take a road trip and
stumble. These losses are tough and need to be learned from and
forgotten quickly. Such is the case for the Wisconsin
Badgers.
(01/26/05 6:00am)
The No. 18-ranked Wisconsin Badgers knew they had a tough
opponent ahead when they saw the No. 1 Fighting Illini on the
schedule. The Badgers knew that it would be a even more difficult
task with the 38-game home-winning streak that had been painted
across the Kohl Center waiting for a team like the Illini to wipe
away.
(01/14/05 6:00am)
Nine wins and three losses is hardly a poor record in the world
of college football. For the Wisconsin Badgers, however, this
year's 9-3 season turned out to fall short of fans' hopes and
dreams. In a sense, the final game of the season, the 2005 Outback
Bowl, could be looked at as a microcosm of the Badgers' 2004
campaign.

The opening day of competition at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas
Invitational was pretty keen to the Wisconsin wrestling team.
Entering the match ranked No. 15, Wisconsin finished in fifth place
with 54 total team points. Six wrestlers put on the moves for the
Badgers and qualified for the quarterfinals.
