The campaign finance overhaul passed by the U.S. Senate
yesterday is significant in many respects. It represents the first
revision of laws governing the funding of political campaigns since
the post-Watergate era in the middle '70s. As many as 11 Republican
senators, in voting for the decidedly Democratic bill, have
recognized a need for change in a system that they have become so
masterful in using.

LONDON'No one was particularly surprised when Robert Mugabe, the
incumbent candidate and leader of Zimbabwe for 22 years, was
declared victor in the troubled presidential election last week. In
fact, after a campaign marked by intimidation, smearing and
outright fraud, the only question on most minds was why Mugabe
bothered holding an election at all.

concluded that the benefits of obtaining a UW-Madison education

advertising campaign linking drug sales with terrorists serves the
dual purpose of addressing the war on terrorism and the war on
drugs. But critics, including Students for a Sensible Drug Policy,
say these advertisements ignore the realities of both drug use and
terrorist funding.

In light of the attacks of Sept. 11, the Islamic community in
the United States has been more noticeable. On the UW-Madison
campus, the Muslim Student Association strives to create an Islamic
cultural environment for students of the Muslim faith and to
increase awareness of their culture within the Madison

Students living in University Housing have reported noticing
significant slowdowns in popular computer file sharing programs.
